Cambridge University v Oxford University – Varsity Match- Day 2 Recap- Cricket News Update
In an thrilling second day where wickets tumbled like ninepins, Cambridge University were 58 for the loss of five wickets in their second innings after they had bundled out the Oxford University side for 138 in their first innings in the inter varsity match
played at Fenner’s ground, Cambridge, dated July 6, 2011.
No side could stamp their authority in the mach however; the events of the day meant that the hosts take a 200 lead going into the third day.
Earlier they made the most of the new ball as no Oxford Batsmen could offer any sort of resilience which led to their side collapsing to an embarrassing total of 138.
However, the start of the second innings for the Cambridge side was nothing short of awful, as they too finished the day at a meager 58, where they had lost their entire top half, leaving the match in a delicate position.
The day started with Cambridge resuming their first innings at 252 for 8 with Matt Hickey batting on 52, partnered by Patrick Sadler (12).
However, Hickey could add only 1 to his overnight score falling to Oxford Skipper, Rajiv Sharma. The last wicket added 27-runs before Sadler was adjudged LBW to Alex Scott. His cameo of 34 included three boundaries and 2 sixes, which led to Cambridge posting
280 on the board.
As the Oxford openers came to bat, they too started cautiously and weathered the new ball well.  Cambridge bowlers bowled a tight length giving no room to the batsmen what so ever.
Just as it seemed that openers were settling, Cambridge captain brought in Thomas Probert into the attack. Probert returned his captain’s faith by dismissing Thomas http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bryan-c48753 (13), trapping him right in front of the wicket.
This led to the collapse as the Cambridge bowlers ruled the proceedings. The pitch seemed to assist the pacers, who completely bamboozled the batsmen. All the top five batsmen got to the double digit mark but failed to carry on with Ben http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Williams-c98034 top scoring
for his side with 27.
Assault on the batsmen continued as wickets continued to tumble with Oxford players having no answer to the ruthless bowling attack, making just 138 in their first innings.
The bowling was special considering the fact that there were four LBW’s and three bowled in the Oxford innings.
For Cambridge, Probert captured an impressive 4 wicket haul followed by Best who claimed three scalps.
Taking a lead of 142 in their second innings, Cambridge seemed overconfident. This immediately led to their downfall as their start was nothing short of eventful.  The evening session belonged to Oxford bowlers who ran riot dismissing the top half of the
Cambridge side with the top four failing to get to double figures.
The pick of the bowlers was Paul Higham, who wicket less in the first innings got three in just a single session that included both Oxford openers, trapping them LBW. He was well supported by fellow bowlers, Sharma and Alex Scott who grabbed wicket a piece.
At the close of exhilarating day 2 in which a total of 17 wickets fell, which included 7 LBW’s and three cleaned bowled, still no side could break away leaving the match well poised.
