Cambridgeshire defeat Hertfordshire by 81 runs: Minor Counties Championship 2011
Cambridgeshire overcame Hertfordshire by 81 runs in a match of the Minor Counties Championship 2011, at Cricket Field Lane, Bishop’s Stortford in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013, on Tuesday, June 14, 2011.
Hertfordshire required 280 runs for victory, but were all-out for 198 on the final day’s play. The first day was washed out due to rain, which left both teams with very less time in the match, but they managed to produce a result in the end.
Cambridgeshire were asked to bat by the Hertfordshire skipper, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Andrew-Stuart-Lewis-c44608. The conditions were even, as there was something for both the batsmen and the bowlers in the pitch. However, the rain from the first day was expected to leave some moisture beneath
the surface of the wicket.
The decision by http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Paul-Joseph-McMahon-c81124 batted
with responsibility, leading their team out of trouble.
The pair constructed 90 runs for the sixth wicket partnership and guided the team’s total above 150. Both batsmen missed-out on half-centuries though, getting out for 45 and 49 in their respective knocks.
Cameos of 31 and 20 from http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ajaz-Akhtar-c42451 and Paul Summerskill took the Cambridgeshire’s total to 229.
The batsmen were mainly troubled by Jon Ryan, who didn’t give anything away and took a couple of wickets in the innings.
In reply, Hertfordshire declared their innings after scoring just 82 runs. They had seven wickets in hand, but wanted a result from the game and decided to declare the innings way too early. The team had lost three wickets for just 50 runs on the board,
but Nesan Jeyaratnam and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/William-George-Jones-c97106 were batting nicely before the innings was stopped. They were unbeaten on 18 and 15 respectively.
Ajaz managed to trouble the batsmen with the new ball and took one wicket in the innings.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-David-Williams-c65589 scored a terrific half-century, guiding Cambridgeshire to 132 for five before the innings was declared. He remained unbeaten on 53 runs, giving his side an overall lead of 280.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/William-Douglas-Rudge-c96947 managed to pick up three wickets in the innings, but his efforts went in vain as the Hertfordshire batsmen failed to chase down the target.
Louis Champion and the Hertfordshire skipper scored 61 and 50 in their respective knocks, but only guided their team to 198. There was no other player to make an impression and all batsmen were sent back to the hut below 200.
McMahon played a crucial part in his team’s success, as he picked up a four-wicket haul.
