Cambridgeshire win a thrilling match against Lincolnshire: Minor Counties Championship 2011
Cambridgeshire edged to a victory against Lincolnshire by three wickets in a match of the Minor Counties Championship, at The Avenue Sports Club Ground, March in http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 on Tuesday, July 12, 2011.
The hosts had to chase down 306 runs for victory, which they did after a superb fight back, losing seven wickets in the innings. The highlight of the innings was a fabulous unbeaten half-century from the team’s captain http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Paul-Joseph-McMahon-c81124, who led from the front.
Lincolnshire’s captain, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Paul-Alan-William-Cook-c80985, opted to bat first after winning the toss. There was no assistance for the bowlers in the pitch and Cook expected his team to post a decent first innings total.
However, three quick wickets fell in the visitors’ innings, which put them on the back foot.
The innings was then stabilised by James http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Morgan-c77707 and Cook, who put together 183 runs for the fourth-wicket partnership, guiding their team’s total to 275 for the loss of three wickets.
Both batsmen played with effortless ease and finished with 120 and 100 in their respective knocks.
However, the lower-order collapsed, as the last seven wickets in the Lincolnshire innings fell for just 32 runs, restricting the team to 307 in their first outing.
McMahon did a fabulous job for his team with the ball, dismissing four batsmen in the Lincolnshire innings.
Cambridgeshire failed to make an impression once they came out to bat, as they lost nine wickets for just 89 runs on the board. Nick Ferraby was the only top-order batsman to make an impression, as he scored 53 runs before being dismissed.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/James-Smith-c1654 rescued their team from complete disaster, collecting 101 runs for the last wicket partnership. The latter was the final wicket to fall in the innings after collecting 39 runs.
Bruce batted superbly though and remained unbeaten on 53. The hosts were all-out for 190, giving a 117-run lead to the opposition.
Adam http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Shepherd-c89969 was in menacing form, as he picked up seven wickets in the innings for his side.
Lincolnshire would have been looking forward to an impressive show in their second outing, as they had a huge lead. However, their batting failed miserably and the entire team was restricted to 188.
Morgan and Cook were yet again brilliant with the bat, scoring 68 and 48 in their respective outings, but there no other batsman in the team to make an impression.
Lewis Bruce led the fight back for his team, taking seven wickets in the innings for Cambridgeshire.
Lincolnshire still had a very solid lead of 305 runs and they would have been eying a comfortable win, but the hosts played exceptionally well in their second innings, winning the match by three wickets in the end.
All the batsmen chipped in with some runs and McMahon made sure to bat until the end. He remained unbeaten on 55, guiding his team to 307 for the loss of seven in the end.
Alex Osmond picked up three wickets for the visitors, but his effort went in vain.
