  1. Worth buying? The HDR-HC9. MiniDV tape, mic-in jack, manual audio control, LANC port, DV/HDV format, uses IEEE1394a/firewire/i.Link for video transfer for editing in a computer; can export the finished project from the computer back to the camcorder so you can watch the finished project in high definition by connecting the camcorder to a HDTV with HDMI.

I would not waste my hard earned money on the consumer internal hard drive, flash memory or DVD based hidef cams because they use AVCHD for video compression, they do not have manual audio control... and you can't send the finished video project back to the camera for high-def playback.

I would consider the external firewire connected hard drive that miniDV tape based camcorders can use: http://pro.sony.com/bbsc/ssr/cat-broadca...

But the NEWEST camcorder - to answer your question directly - appears to be the HDR-TG1... AVCHD compression, small lens, small imaging chips, so-so zoom, no external mic connectivity, no manual audio control, no web streaming... Newest does not always translate to "best", unless your only criteria is that best = smallest.
