Camelot a race away from the Triple Crown after winning the Derby
Unbeaten in the four career starts and the winner of the 2,000 Guineas did not hold back on winning the second leg of the English Triple Crown, the Investec Derby. The three-year-old won the Group 1 on 2nd June as the 8/13 favourite while leading
the runner up, Main Sequence, by five lengths.
The Aidan O’Brien trained had Joseph O’Brien onboard. Even the other entry of the hall mark trainer did not finish really far off from the winner. Astrology settled third behind Camelot.
His fiercest opponent in the race, Andrew Balding trained, Bonfire could only manage the sixth place on the field of nine contestants.
The proud winning trainer also won the Investec Oaks but not through the actual hope, Maybe but Was was the one who brought back the title for the trainer. It has been the most happening season for the trainer who first dominated the 1000 and 2000 Guineas
and then monopolised the Epsom meeting too.
It was last in 1970 that a thoroughbred won the Triple Crown, Camelot has instigated the inspiration once again and that has to be the only honour that is missing from the high profile of Aidan O’Brein.
"We'll take it race by race and see what Michael [Tabor] and Derrick [Smith] say, but who wouldn't want to win the Triple Crown?" said part-owner John Magnier. "I might not have said the same 30 years ago but we're getting older now and these things mean
so much more."
Aidan O'Brien said. "He was very impressive in his two runs at two and we were over the moon with his first run this year in the Guineas. Every trip he's raced over so far has been the same. He didn't look finished at the line today."
What he has achieved at this very young age will bring him shoulder to shoulder with some older, highly exceptional and experienced horses. After the Derby, Camelot was rated 124 which is the rating that was awarded to Sea The Stars back in 2009 win.
He has surged his benchmark so very high all of a sudden that a race between him and the racing legend, Frankel, is already being anticipated.
For now how will Aidan O’Brien stratigise the work outs and drills for his under charge, particularly keeping the encounter with older horses in mind, is highly crucial.
