Camelot to become British Triple Crown winner - Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes at Doncaster
The big moment has finally come. Every individual, who follows horseracing even a little, was anxiously waiting for September 15th - the day Camelot would try to become the first legend to lift the big title of British Triple Crown in 42 years.
Ladbrokes St Leger Stakes, the third race of the high-profile English event, is due to start at 15:40 GMT. A lot of giants initially entered the race, but the field kept shrinking with time, and eventually only nine dashing horses have made it to the final
line-up.
Camelot has been unbeaten since his debut in July last year. Owned by Derrick Smith & Mrs John Magnier & Michael Tabor, the maverick colt has four Group 1 titles to his name, including this season’s Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, Investec Derby and Qipco 2000
Guineas Stakes.
After recording a narrow win over French Fifteen at Newmarket, A. P. O’Brien’s charge did not take any risk, and ensured comprehensive victories respectively at Epsom and Curragh.
Camelot’s three classy acts early in the season are good enough to suggest that he is easily the best 3-year-old around. According to our calculations, there is no convincing reason to believe that he will not remain firmly on top over this longer distance.
Nonetheless, it is not going to be a straightforward outing for the big fellow. The line-up includes a few big names, such as Main Sequence, Thought Worthy and Michelangelo. Thus, Camelot will have to be on top of his game in order to capture the big prize
worth £311,905.
Thought Worthy looked quite impressive at York, where he beat Main Sequence and others. John Gosden’s trainee, brother to the 2007 St Leger winner Lucarno, is likely to be suited by this longer trip. So, he can easily be regarded as the biggest threat to
Camelot.
Since the beginning of British Triple Crown in 1853, only 15 horses have accomplished the feat. The title was previously grabbed by Nijinsky in 1970. All eyes are glued on Camelot to see whether he will be able to register his name among the British Triple
Crown winners. The way he has been performing since the outset of this season, it is not hard to expect him to do the trick.
