Camelot to run in Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby at Curragh
Aidan O'Brien's 3-year-old charge, Camelot, is all set to take part in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby, scheduled to take place at Curragh on June 30th. The bay colt has been unbeaten since his debut last year, winning all four starts at different
venues.
After making two wonderful outings last season, the dashing runner went on a long vacation. He stayed out of action for more than half a year before returning to action last month.
Despite coming back from a long layoff, O'Brien's trainee was super impressive on his seasonal debut at Newmarket. The Group 1 Qipco 2000 Guineas Stakes (British Champions Series) saw him beating French Fifteen by a neck’s distance.
After an excellent success at Newmarket, the rampant colt continued his good work, when sent at Epsom earlier this month. In the Group 1 Investec Derby, Camelot was outstanding all the way through.
Under JP O’Brien, he took a steadied start and held up in the last trio. Although he was not impressive in the early stages of the race, a splendid job in the final moments helped him secure the first place quite easily. Camelot beat Main Sequence by five
lengths to finish first on the podium.
The D Smith, Mrs J Magnier, M Tabor-owned has a great chance of becoming the first British Triple Crown winner after Nijinsky in 1970, if he wins the Ladbrokes St Leger this season.
After making two great journeys, the dazzling runner is well prepared to run on home soil for the first time. Revealing the news, Anne Marie O'Brien, the trainer's wife, stated that the trainer is planning to run Camelot at Curragh.
"Aidan is planning to run Camelot in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby but no final decision has been taken yet,” the handler’s wife said.
"He always has a few horses in the race and the other horses (Imperial Monarch, Astrology and Athens) are still all in the mix. It will be the weekend before plans are finalised," she added.
Considering his wonderful record, one can easily expect Aidan O'Brien's charge to bag an easy win in the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby later this month.
