I am planning to buy a lens for my camera. I have a Canon EOS Rebel XTi. I don't know which one to buy a Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro USM Lens or a Canon EF 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS USM Standard Zoom Lens?

  1. The 28-135 will be more useful to you, it's reasonably priced, and the brand won't let you down.

  2. Those are two completely different lenses - with different purposes. The zoom one is basically the 'walk around, general use lens' (basically good all around). Your kit lens is 18-55 mm--is "wider" than this one.

The other lens, 100 mm f 2.8, is a 'macro' lens. It lets you take very close up photos of things. It also makes a perfect portrait lens, too. However, with your camera, having a cropped sensor, this lens turns out to work like a 165 mm, which is too 'long' really for a portrait, but nevertheless, we can safely assume that the 100 mm lens is sharper than the zoom one.

I do have the 100 mm lens, and you can see some of the photos here. http://www.flickr.com/little_pooky  It is a very sharp lens when used properly. (See the last photo on page 6)

Keep in mind that your coverage is not as 'wide' as mine (Canon 5D)

  3. The 100 2.8 is a fast excellent for portraits however, your stuck with a straight lens, no room to take in a lot of area. The 28-135 3.5-5.6 is a slow lens. Not too good in low light but you are able to take in a wider area or zoom in close on you subject.

  4. I'd go with the 28 to 135, you will get way more use out of it. For the price it's a great lens, especially because of the IS feature.
