  1. What a great idea! A new way to steal from a store and then later complain about their high prices.

Just buy a couple of disposable cameras.

  2. Is it legal?... That's going to vary state to state or region to region.  To my knowledge, there is no federal law that would make it illegal.  You'll have to check your state/local laws.

Is it allowed?... Some places will allow it, but they might charge a restocking fee.  (Typically 15%, so you'd only get an 85% refund.)  If the camera looks like it has been used a lot, they may not allow it all, even if you have the receipt and everything in the original packaging.

Is it ethical?...  Well you did buy the camera, so don't expect to be able to use it and then return it.  Actions like that end up hurting not only the store, but also the next person who buys the camera.  (And if it happens enough times, it gets passed on to everyone that shops at that store in the way of price increases.) I would suggest you looking at rent to own type places and see what digital cameras they have.  It's a much more ethical way of using a camera for a vacation that you don't intend to keep.  (It also might cost less than the restocking fee for a returned camera.)  Plus its more of a sure thing that you'll be able to return it.

Of course, be careful with it, because no matter which way you try and get it, if you damage it, you'll probably be up a creek and out of pocket.

Another option is disposable cameras.  Some are digital and others are film that also come with a cd when you get the prints.  Disposable cameras are low quality, so I still recommend renting over getting a disposable.

  3. I suggest you buy a disposable digital camera.
