Alright here's my dilemma. I have a Tamron 28-75 and i love it. i have a canon 70-200 f4L and i love it too. these are my babies. But i constantly finding myself switching lenses just to get to the 80 - 100 mm range, and i rarely end up using the long end of my canon. I also find myself struggling a bit with low light on the tamron. Even though it sports a 2.8 fixed ap., some of these night shots are really killing me. Dust is always finding itself on my sensor from switching lenses often

I mainly shoot travel and landscape, with occasional portraits.

I've been shooting for 4 years on an amateur level and i'm really ready to take things to the next step, so would you guys recommend trading in my canon and tamron and shelling out the extra cash to get the 24-105 f4L IS? That lens has been my eye candy for the last year for my 40d. I've seen it around and it has left me drooling.

what should i do? trade or not?

P.S: i'm giving myself excuses to buy this thing so keep it unbiased =)

  1. If you are having problem with Tamrom at f 2.8 now, having the f 4 (Canon 24-105 mm) will make it worse. The IS is not going to help.

The Canon 24-70 mm f 2.8 will be a little long for your camera.

If you want to do landscape, the EF-S 17-55 f 2.8 will be more useful. Unless you plan to upgrade to a full fame Canon, this is a very nice lens.

I had that little 70-200 mm f 4--it is a great lens. The low end of that lens is perfect for portraits.

I find that the 24-70 mm f 2.8 is a perfect walk-around lens for me. I use it with Canon 5D so this does not exactly apply to a cropped sensor camera such as yours.

this one shows the different focal lengths http://www.flickr.com/photos/little_pook... (you have to divide it with 1.6 to apply to yours).

  2. If you go with the 24-105 f /4 you still wont have a fast lens but you can get hand held shots with a lower shutter speed but the IS only corrects hand shake it will do nothing at all for subject movement blur.

I spent 3 weeks trying to decide between the 24-105 and the 24-70mm f/2.8L.I chose the 24-70 and have not regretted my decision at all.It is one fantastic lens auto focus is very fast and the photo's are tack sharp with really beautiful color and contrast.

Since you say you mainly shoot travel and landscapes the 24-70mm focal length should be perfect for this.It also makes dar-n fine portraits. You already have a very fine f /4L lens I suggest you go for the f/2.8.The performance of this lens has really been top notch for me.
