Camera dropped, lens won't retract or expand

Question

My son dropped the camera smack dab on the lens while it was on in camera mode. The lens was crooked and you could hear the gears turning when you tried to shut the camera on or off. Is this fixable by me or does it have to be sent off? I've had estimates from $50 to $150, at the $150 price I should probably buy a new cam. Any help from anyone? Thanks
