Cameron 'Cam' Newton will visit Buffalo Bills - NFL
Former Auburn University star quarterback Cameron “Cam” Newton will be visiting the Buffalo Bills National Football League (NFL) team before the NFL Draft sets to take place next month.
Bills head coach Chan Gailey confirmed that the Heisman Trophy winner will be visiting the team’s Orchard Park facility before the draft.
Gailey couldn’t remember if this was the fourth or fifth time that Newton have met with the Bills, since they will pick third in the 2011 NFL Draft. The Bills need improvements in many areas after a 4-12 2010 season but are seriously considering picking
a quarterback with one of their nine picks, possibly the first. The coach believes that the visit on Tuesday will be the most important because he will spend a whole day with Newton, getting to know him.
"These visits have a big impact on what we think and what we do and what we believe about the guys that we plan to draft," Gailey said. "I don't know if I can find it out in a day with a guy, but you'll have a better idea once you get a chance to sit down
and talk football and maybe watch some tape. I think you get a better feel."
Tony Paige, Newton’s agent, said in an email that Newton has eight visits scheduled with other teams, including the teams that hold the first and second overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Carolina Panthers and Denver Broncos, respectively. He will also
be visiting the Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Washington Redskins, Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns and Cincinnati Bengals.
Gailey said that the team is still deciding on whether they want to draft a player like Newton who needs time to develop or draft a player that can make a change immediately. The head coach also said that the team needs the most help in pass protection and
defense.
"Now, our greatest need is not quarterback," general manager Buddy Nix said. "Invariably, if there's going to be a franchise guy there, and one we deem as a guy that can go eight or 10 years and be the face of the organization and take us to the playoffs
and win every year: you can't pass him up."
The 2011 NFL Draft will start on 28 April in New York City.
