Cameron Shepherd joins the Northampton Saints – Rugby News Update
Cameron Shepherd, the 28-year-old fullback who is equally adept at the wing has made the switch from the Force to the Northampton Saints.
He is excited at switching leagues, which will present him with a new challenge. While comparing his former team, the Force, to the Saints, he said both have a strong fan base.
Jim Mallinder, the head coach of the Saints was a winger short after Chris Ashton moved to the Saracens ahead of the new season, and he opted for Shepherd, who he had wanted for a while due to his versatility.
While commenting on the new signing he said, "Cameron is a very talented player who has shown regularly that he has the ability and temperament to compete at the highest level," and he further added, "He has a positive impact for his team's attacking capability
but is also sold defensively and under the high ball.”
Shepherd is equally excited about switching to the Saints, and said that he has heard great things about Mallinder, especially his coaching techniques. He also believes that the Saints play rugby in a way that would suit his style of play, and it will be
easy for him to make the transition.
While commenting on the team he said, "It is definitely going to be a new challenge for me. The Premiership is a tough competition and there are a lot of teams which like to play exciting rugby, especially the Saints.”
Besides having amazing ability on the wing and as a fullback, he is very good at kicking the ball. He is considered one of the most dangerous players in Australian rugby when fully fit.
Having represented Australia at U-21 and A level, he earned his first international cap against his country of birth, England, at Sydney, on June 11, 2006. So far he has played for Australia a total of 9 times, starting 5 of those games, and coming on as
a substitute a further 4 times. He played his last international game against France, at Brisbane, on July 5, 2008.
A new challenge in England could be his ticket back to an international call-up.
