Cameron Smith is all set to slip into Darren Lockyer's captaincy role - Rugby news
While talking to reporters on Tuesday, November 22, Cameron Smith confirmed that he is all set to act as the next Australian captain, to succeed Darren Lockyer, who just bowed out of his on-field role.
Lockyer has ended his 17-year stellar career on a high note by bagging a 30-8 Gillette Four Nations Final victory in Elland Road, Leeds. The best part of their Four Nations’ win was that the 34-year-old had scored the last of his side’s total five tries.
He stated tha he could not wish for a better exit than that.
The campaign ended with Lockyer’s farewell game. The next thing that needed to be settled immediately by the Australians was to look for a deserving replacement for Lockyer. For that matter, Smith fulfills all criteria perfectly.
He has had an experience of that role too. Recently, Smith filled in for captaincy almost a week ago, when his side fought against Wales in Wrexham and squad played really well under his lead. It is believed by many that he will be handed over the responsibility
on permanent basis from 2012 onwards.
Expressing his views about filling in the recently emptied captaincy position, Smith said, "If I'm given the job, I'd be delighted. There are a lot of guys in there that could fill the role of captain of this team. I'd be very proud to have the 'c' next
to my name. If I can do the job as well as Darren, I'd be very happy with that."
Recalling Lockyer’s final minutes’ try, Smith further added, "It was just like fate, wasn't it, the ball ricocheting off the post. It was very fitting - it would have been nice if he'd kicked the goal as well. That was one of the worst kicks I've ever seen
from him. I know all the boys are very happy for Darren.”
He further added that nobody until now had discussed who will take over captaincy after Lockyer’s exit. However, the decision will be made as soon as possible.
He went on and added that all Roos were too busy thinking about their captain’s final game. They all wanted to play for their captain, which meant nothing but a win. They had been ambitioning for nothing but victory and now they are very happy that their
long time skipper has finished on a fairy tale note.
