Cameron Van Der Burgh dominates Men’s 50m breast-stroke semi-finals: Day three –World Championships
Cameron Van Der Burgh of South Africa dominated the Men’s 50m breast-stroke semi-finals on day three of the 2011 FINA World Championships on Tuesday, July 26, in Shanghai, China.
The World Long Course Championships is the 14th Federation Internationale de Natation (FINA) organised event, which provides a chance to the world’s best swimmers to compete with each other.
The 23-year-old Van Der Burgh claimed the fastest qualification spot in the final rounds, by overwhelming the efforts of his fellow swimmers, with a timing of 26.90 seconds. He was just 0.23 seconds away from his own championship and world record of 26.67
seconds, which he set at the 2009 Rome World Championships, in July.
He was followed by Brazilian swimmer, Felipe Franca Da Silva, who stayed 0.05 seconds behind him and reached the final round as the second best swimmer, by submitting a time of 26.95 seconds. Alexander Dale Oen of Norway proved his eligibility for the third
fastest spot of the event, as he reported in a time of 27.33 seconds.
Moments later, Fabio Scozzoli of Italy appeared as the fourth finest swimmer to qualify into the final round, as he concluded his swim in a time of 27.37 seconds. The arena also witnessed an immense battle between Damir Dugonjic of Slovenia and Lennart Stekelenburg
of Netherlands, who engaged with each other in an immense battle to secure the fifth fastest qualification spot.
Both swimmers failed to escape each other in the one-lap swim and completed their swims in an identical time of 27.51 seconds for the fifth best spot. Hendrik Feldwehr of Germany was the seventh fastest swimmer of the breast-stroke swim, as he concluded
his swim in a time of 27.53 seconds. Mark Gangloff of USA secured the eighth fastest qualification spot into the final, as he posted a time of 27.57 seconds.
In addition, the arena acknowledged the commendable swims of all participants, while the crowd’s favourite, Van Der Burgh, expressed the desire of improving his own world record in the final round of the event.
