Cameron Wurf to miss the Vuelta as team Liquigas ready to defend Nibali’s title – Cycling News
Australian cyclist Cameron Wurf who injured his rib during the Eneco Tour will end up missing the Grand Tour starting tomorrow. His name has been excluded from the Vuelta a Espana list yesterday as organisers released the tour start list.
Wurf is a former rower as he mentioned that he totally has faced the injuries 4 times out of which 2 times was during his rowing career and remaining 2 in his cycling career since he started his career in 2001. He further added that he is aware of the fact
that he has to miss the Vuelta a Espana as his team has already been dropped him from the team list.
Cameron was disappointed because of the injury just before the Vuelta as he was really looking forward to the event and stated that he is still willing to take the risk and ride the Vuelta but he is also worried that he might ruin team chances in the event
because of his physical state as he wrote on his blog, “While the selfish side of me would be prepared to take the risk- the risk of something going wrong and jeopardising the team’s effort to defend Vincenzo Nibali’s crown, meant the only option was to step
aside.”
He further added that he will get the fractured rib scanned in few more days and a clearer picture will come in front and only after that he would be able to plan his return in the coming events towards the end of the year.
The Australian could not hide the disappointment as he wrote towards the end of his blog, “Time to rub a few more kg's of arnica cream on my busted wing and get some shut eye, another big day ahead tomorrow spinning my legs away in front of the television.”
Cameron could have been the only Australian cyclist to represent team Liquigas-Cannondale in the Vuelta. The team of 9 cyclists with 7 Italian 1 German and 1 Slovakian rider will fight at the grand tour as Vuelta a Espana starts on August 20.
The 7 Italian players include Nibali Vincenzo, Agnoli Valerio, Caruso Damiano, Capecchi Eros, Da Dalto Mauro, Marangoni Alan and Bellotti Francesco with Nerz Dominique of Germany and Sagan Peter of Slovakia.
It will be interesting to see how the team Liquigas-Cannondale fights and defends the title of former Vuelta a Espana winner Nibali Vincenzo.
