Cameron van der Burgh claims Men’s 100m breaststroke gold: Day one - 2012 Sette Colli Meet, Italy
Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa claimed gold medal of the Men’s 100m breaststroke on initial day of the 2012 Sette Colli Meet in Rome, Italy on Thursday, June 14.
The 24-year-old van der Burgh was the only swimmer to lower the championship record on first night of the tournament. With his unrelenting efforts, he managed to outperform his toughest competitor over the finishing end and grabbed gold medal of the event.
The South African swimmer remained just a touch away from his challenger and reached the finishing end for gold medal by posting a time of 1 minute and 00.39 seconds.
His gold winning effort remained 0.04 seconds faster from Fabio Scozzoli of Italy, who secured second position of the discipline by submitting a time of 1 minute and 00.43 seconds.
The silver medallist enjoyed an advantage of 0.45 seconds over his following rival, Giacomo Perez Dortona of France, who secured third position of the discipline by producing an effort of 1 minute and 00.88 seconds.
Fourth position of the discipline was secured by Marco Koch of Germany, who stayed 0.04 seconds apart and clocked an effort of 1 minute and 00.92 seconds.
Subsequently, Koch was followed by Ryo Tateishi of Japan, who remained 0.26 seconds apart and ended fifth in the event with an effort of 1 minute and 01.18 seconds.
Sixth position of the discipline was secured by Flavio Bizzarri of Italy, who remained 0.30 seconds slower from his preceding swimmer and hit the finishing wall with an effort of 1 minute and 01.48 seconds.
Bizzarri was chased by his teammate, Andrea Toniato, who finished seventh in the discipline by clocking an effort of 1 minute and 01.59 seconds.
Last position of the 100m event was gained by Lennart Stekelenburg of Netherlands, who stayed nearly full body length behind and submitted a time of 1 minute and 02.32 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, the crowd admired gruelling form of van der Burgh, who aroused hopes of his supporters by saying that he will try to achieve the same at the upcoming 2012 London Olympic Games.
