Cameron van der Burgh grabs Men’s 50m breaststroke gold – FINA/Arena Swimming World Cup
Cameron van der Burgh of South Africa grabbed gold medal of the Men’s 50m breaststroke on opening day of the 2012 FINA/ARENA Swimming World Cup in Dubai, United Arab Emirates on Tuesday, October 2.
The South African swimmer, who broke the world record of the 100m breaststroke at the 2012 London Olympic Games, showed no mercy to his challengers and sprinted his way towards the wall for the title.
With his persistent efforts, Burgh remained one stroke ahead of his closest competitor and touched the wall for gold medal by clocking a wonderful effort of 26.64 seconds.
The champion was followed by his teammate, Guilio Zorzi, who stayed 0.27 seconds away from upsetting the gold medallist and touched the wall for second position with a timing of 26.91 seconds.
The second position holder was traced by Glenn Snyders of New Zealand, who stayed 0.13 seconds behind and transpired on the finishing end as third fastest swimmer by clocking an effort of 27.04 seconds.
The bronze medallist was followed by Marco Koch of Germany, who remained only 0.01 seconds apart and settled on the wall as fourth best swimmer by producing a time of 27.05 seconds.
Koch was chased by Neil Versfeld of South Africa, who stayed 0.19 seconds apart and emerged on the finishing blockade as fifth position holder by posting a time of 27.24 seconds.
Subsequently, Neil remained 0.19 seconds ahead of Sergey Geybel of Russia, who earned sixth position of the event by producing a time of 27.43 seconds.
Geybel was traced by Roland Schoeman of South Africa, who stayed 0.41 seconds behind and posted a time of 27.84 seconds for seventh position.
Schoeman was traced by Sean Mahoney of USA, who tried hard to overpower his preceding swimmer but failed to do so. Mahoney remained 0.05 seconds slower from his former finisher and clocked a time of 27.89 seconds for eighth position.
In addition, Burgh received massive appreciation from the crowd for his exhausting efforts in the discipline and articulated that he would continue his struggle to achieve the same at subsequent stages of the World Cup.
