Camila Giorgi overcomes Yung-Jan Chan to reach main draw – Family Circle Cup 2012
Seeded 19th at the event, Camila Giorgi survived a scare before beating world number, 133 Yung-Jan Chan of Chinese Taipei, in three sets 6-7(5), 7-5, 6-3 in the final qualifier at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston,
USA on Sunday.
The Italian, Giorgi, needed two hours and 44 minutes to win a marathon encounter.
Giorgi and Chan found it difficult to hold their serve in the first set, as six of the first 10 games were broken to equalise the score at 5-5. They managed to win next two to take it to a tie-breaker. Giorgi and Chan were again
going on neck to neck but the Taiwanese managed to grab two consecutive points in the end to claim it 7-6(5).
Both players were erratic on the second serve, hitting three double faults each. However, Chan was better on the first, as she put in 76 percent and converted 25 of the 44 of them into points. The Taiwanese succeeded in saving
10 of the 13 break points she faced in the opener.
Breaks continued to happen in the second set but a less than the first. Both players struck twice in the first 10 games to even out the score at 5-5. However, Giorgi was able to win two games in a row this time, sealing it 7-5.
Giorgi was lucky to win the second set despite having an even worse second serve. The Italian committed five pathetic double faults and managed to win just 10 of the 24 second delivery points. She was brilliant on the returns,
clinching 10 of the 24 first and eight of the 13 second reply points.
In contrast to the first two sets, both players held their serve in the first four games to square off the score at 2-2. Chan went into the driving seat by breaking the Italian in the fifth game and attaining a 3-2 lead. However,
it was all Giorgi show after that as she did not lose even a single game, striking twice to capture it 6-3.
Both players hit an ace and one double fault in the decider. Giorgi gave a poor first serve performance, as she delivered just 42 percent of them compared to 85 percent by Chan. Nevertheless, the Italian won all the four second
return points in the final set.
Giorgi is slated to face Barbora Zahlavova Strycova of Czech Republic in the first round of the main draw.
