Camila Giorgi stuns Galina Voskoboeva to reach the main round – Toray Pan Pacific Open 2012
World number 91, Camila Giorgi, stunned the 68th ranked Kazakh superstar, Galina Voskoboeva, in the final qualifying round of the Toray Pan Pacific Open on the eve of Saturday. She clinched a triumph in straight sets
6-0, 6-4; thumping the eighth seed professional out of the qualifiers. It was a tremendous result for the 20-year-old Italian who has been seeking such a breakthrough to enhance the overall ranking in the world.
The 27-year-old Kazakh failed to hold serve in the first game of the match and could only win two points on her opponent’s serve. It was a terrible start for the experienced professional and the third game of the match further
depressed her. She was trailing 0-4 by the end of the fourth game and a terrible third serve thumped her under the woods.
Voskoboeva had to break serve in the sixth game to escape an embarrassing bagel at the hands of the inferior ranked player. However, Giorgi was intelligent to understand the situation and slowed the tempo of the game to frustrate
the Kazakh further; didn’t give her any pace to work with that worked perfectly in her favour. She registered a cracking bagel and marched on to the second phase of the match.
The Kazakh failed to hold serve in the first game of the second set as well. It seemed like she had forgotten to hold serve at all. However, the little cameo from Voskoboeva yielded a breakpoint back in the following game that
levelled the scores at 2-2.
Both players traded breakthroughs to push the scores to 2-2 before the Kazakh held serve for the first time to tickle the scoreboard at 3-2. Giorgi followed her and comfortably hung on to her serve that equalized the scores at
3-3. Voskoboeva faltered on her serve and gifted yet another breakpoint to her rival who protected it with a commanding serve hold that extended the lead to 5-3.
The 20-year-old Italian was under pressure in the final game but she survived the onslaught to book a date with the Austrian professional, Tamira Paszek, for the first round meeting.
