Camilla Hedberg grabs second round lead at British Women’s Amateur Championship
Spanish Women’s Amateur Champion Camilla Hedberg is now leading the British Women Amateur Championship with her solid second-round score of five-under, 69 at the Royal Portrush links in Northern Ireland.
Hedberg consolidated her first round score of 71 to move to the top slot of the Stroke Play phase of the championship, and now has an aggregate score of eight-under, 140. Overnight leader, Minjee Lee of Australia dropped down on the leaderboard after her
disappointing round of 80 to end up with 148. She carded a round of 68 on Tuesday but failed to match yesterday’s brilliance on the course.
Yesterday’s runners up Lydia Ko also slumped with her second round score of one-under, 73 to finish off with an aggregate score of four-under, 144. The reigning Australian and Kiwi champion and number one in amateur rankings, could not keep up with her brilliant
first round and was seen battling the tough link-style course all day. She carded four birdies and three bogeys and blamed the tough conditions on the course for her disappointing round.
"The whole course was windy and very wet in the afternoon. On one hole where I hit a seven iron yesterday, I had to hit three wood today and it was still not enough," Ko said.
For Sweden’s Nathalie Mansson, however, the conditions turned out to be perfect. Mansson was the top scorer for the day and pulled in a staggering ten birdies to finish seven-under, 67. The young golfer improved by nine shots from her first round score of
76.
Sweden’s Louise Kristersson carded four birdies on the last holes to close her round of 69 for an aggregate round of 142.
“I have not been picked for Sweden’s European team so that gave me the motivation for my four birdies at the end. The national coach just arrived to watch me,” said Louise, who is also a debutant at the British Women’s Amateur Championship this year.
Total of 64 players made it into the Match Play phase of the tournament from a field of 128. Ko along with Cecilia Cho, are the two aspiring Kiwis aiming to clinch the title for the first time after Marnie McGuire’s victory in 1986.
