Camille Muffat aims to participate in the 100m freestyle at 2011 World Championships – Swimming News
The 200m freestyle world champion, Camille Muffat, has said that she has an aim to compete in the 100m freestyle event at the 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
The 21-year-old Muffat expressed that she will participate in the 100m freestyle at the upcoming Paris Open and Mare Nostrum Tour and if she posts a good result, then she will participate in the same event at the upcoming world stage, during July.
France’s Muffat has secured seven medals throughout her international swimming career, during her participation in the World Short Course Championships, European Long Course Championships and the Short Course European Championships. She won two gold medals,
two silver medals and three bronze medals during her entire swimming career. Her latest accomplishments includes the gold winning performance in the 200m freestyle and a bronze finish in the 4*200m freestyle relay, at the 2010 World Short Course Championships
in Dubai, during December, 2010.
Her swimming coach, Fabrice Pellerin, told media about her future plans and said that if Muffat posts a time of less than 54 seconds at the upcoming swimming meets, then she will participate in the short freestyle event at the World Championships. The French
swimmer has already qualified to represent her country in the events of 200m freestyle, 4*200m freestyle relay, 400m freestyle and the 800m freestyle.
The conflict arises between the events of 4*200m freestyle relay and the 100m freestyle events, as both events take place in the same session. Therefore, if Muffat achieves her 100m freestyle goal in June, then she will be replacing in the relay event with
the individual 100m freestyle.
The coach also said that losing Muffat in the relay event can be very costly for the French relay team, as there is no substitute available to fill the fourth spot. He also said that this decision can even cost the French swimming team their medal for the
relay event.
In addition, Pellerin also said that the event selection’s decision will be taken after the Paris Open Championships, with the consent of Muffat.
