Camille Muffat wins Women’s 400m freestyle gold medal -
2011 Canet En Roussillon
France’s Camille Muffat has conquered the Women’s 400m freestyle title on the second day of the 2011 Canet En Roussillon.
The championship is the third of the four stops of the 2011 Mare Nostrum Series, where international swimmers are provided with a chance to compete in their main events before the upcoming 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July.
Muffat won the crown of the 400m event in a remarkable time of 4 minutes and 06.93 seconds. Her outstanding performance placed her 5.5 seconds ahead of her strongest competitor, Ophelie Cyrielle Etienne of Dauphins Toulouse Oec. She followed her on the podium
for the silver medal, posting a time of 4 minutes and 12.35 seconds. Similarly, Etienne stayed almost three seconds ahead of her following swimmer, Lieke Verouden, who clocked a time of 4 minutes and 15.26 seconds for the bronze medal.
Muffat is the gold medallist of the 200m freestyle at the 2010 World Short Course Championships. She also won the bronze medal of 4*200m freestyle, being a part of the French swimming team.
The world champion gained a considerable lead from her following swimmer in the initial round, where she clocked a time of 59.98 seconds. She was followed by Etienne and Verouden, who followed her as the second and third fastest swimmers, posting a time
of 1:00.82 and 1:01.42 minutes, respectively.
In the next round, Muffat sustained the top spot and ended her swim with a time of 2 minutes and 02.82 seconds. Etienne gained a lead of almost two seconds from her closest competitor, posting 2:04.30 against Verouden’s timing of 2:06.95 minutes.
Moments later, Muffat retained her fastest position and extended her lead to almost three seconds from Etienne. In the final lap, the champion added a lead of almost 2.5 seconds, achieving the gold medal with a clear distance of 5.42 seconds.
Muffat was happy with her crown winning effort and expressed that she has an eye on the one of the biggest event in the sport, which is the upcoming 2011 World Championships, this July.
