Camilo Hernandez and Guillermo Satt clinch victory in Round 2 heats at Arica World Star Tour
Chile’s Camilo Hernandez and his fellow countryperson Guillermo Satt survived day 2 of the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Arica World Star Tour presented by Maui and Sons after walking away with top honours from their respective Round
2 (Round of 64) heats that went down at the reef break of El Gringo in Arica, Chile, on Thursday, June 14.
Hernandez was accompanied by Peru’s Sebastian Correa, who finished in runner-up place during the 11th heat, into the third round (Round of 32), whereas Brazil’s Halley Batista and Peru’s Joaquin Del Castillo rounded out the third and fourth positions
respectively, consequently getting added to the elimination list.
The 12th heat saw Chile’s Renato Aguirre finished in runner-up to successfully extend his life in the competition by qualifying alongside Satt into the third round. Australia’s Ryan Bignold and Hawaii’s Ian Gentil finished in third and fourth
place respectively, which led to their ejection from the competition field.
The surfing conditions at the primary event site turned out to be nothing short of demanding, with intimidating four-to-six foot barrels on offer at the reef break. The surfers faced a tough challenge of taming such wild waves and searching for good scores.
The local surfers had been pretty much in control since the start of the day and the trend continued with Hernandez claiming victory in the 11th heat through a low yet decisive heat-total of 5.75 points, which included a 2.25 and 3.50-point ride.
Correa finished in second place with a heat-total of 5.25 points, which included a 3.10 and 2.15-point wave. The effort proved sufficient to take him through into the next round.
Batista took third place with a heat-total of 4.60 points, while Del Castillo rounded out the bottom-position with combined wave-total of 3.05 points.
The 12th heat featured one of the most exquisite performances of the day as Satt made the most of his local knowledge of the waves to get hold of a couple of excellent waves during the course of the four-man battle. The Chilean surfer posted a
7.75 on the score-board early in the heat and went on to back it up with an 8.85-point ride for a heat-total of 16.60 points. The score remained far out of his rival’s reach to eventually earn him top honours.
“I’m really happy to have done well in my heat,” said Satt. “I felt good out there because I know this wave really well. I’ve been surfing here since I was 14 years old and I’d love to win this event again because there is nothing better than winning at
home.”
Aguirre survived the heat as well after finishing with a heat-total of 11.50 points, comprising of a 7.00 and 4.50-point ride, to claim runner-up position and consequently go through into the next round.
Bignold and Gentil got eliminated from the competition after finishing with a heat-total of 10.35 and 0.00 points respectively.
