Camilo Villegas, Rickie Fowler and Ernie Els miss the cut at the Players Championship among others
Camilo Villegas and Rickie Fowler dogged out of the Players Championship after missing the cut in the second round of the tournament, which took place at the par-72 Tournament Player Club, Sawgrass.
Villegas teed off from the front and birdied two holes against a bogey. On his way back, he dropped one more shot but wiped it off with a birdie, which helped him compile a score of 1-under par.
The Columbian managed to save par in the second round, but could not make the cut, owing to the five bogeys and one double bogey which he caught in the first round.
Rickie Fowler faced hard luck as he tried to undo the setback in the first round with seven birdies but could not relish success. He teed off from the front and fired six back-to-back birdies with a bogey sandwiched on the third.
The 2010 Rookie of the Year, birdied the par-5 11th, but dropped two shots towards the end of the day which stole away his chance to miss the cut. This is the second time the American has missed a cut in a tournament.
Similar fate was faced by Y.E Yang, Ernie Els, Paul Casey, Francesco Molinari, Ross Fisher, Jim Furyk, Adam Scott, Louis Oosthuizen, Stuart Appleby, Edoardo Molinari, Padraig Harrington, Brendan Steele, Jhonattan Vegas and Anthony Kim.
The long list of players that lost the cut included the names of players who ranked in the top 30 on the Official World Golf Ranking. This proved the severity of the course which has become easier with the changing weather.
Els compiled an aggregate of 1-over par after compiling a 73 on Friday. The South African dropped eight shots in the 36-hole session and missed the chance to bid on the trophy of the fifth flagship event on the PGA tour.
Francesco Molinari tried to rejoice into the tournament with a 70, but could not undo the damage done by one double-bogey and two bogeys from the first round. Opposite action was taken by his brother, Eduardo, who finished at par in the first round, but
carded a 78 in the second round.
