Camilo Villegas makes Shot of the Day after making an eagle at par-5 at the Heritage – Golf news
Camilo Villegas eagled the par-5 fifth to have his name registered in the ‘Shot of the Day’ accolade.
The Columbian composed a score of five-under par 66 in the opening round of the PGA Tour’s Heritage tournament to take two seats behind the leader, Garrett Willis.
Villegas teed off from the back-nine considering the softer greens and birdied three holes in a row starting from the par-3 14th. He capped the first half with a score of two-under par and proceeded towards the front-nine to marvel the crowd.
While he was on his way to the front-nine, strong winds started creating resistance in driving.
Despite that, the Columbian aimed his tee shot at the left side of the fifth green and landed on target. Adjusting the speed and angle of the swing, the player chipped from 43 feet for an eagle and watched it go into the cup with utmost perfection.
The player was chosen for the honours by the officials of the tournament courtesy of his superb shot.
The three-time winner of the PGA Tour had his share of limelight ever since he turned a pro. The most interesting case was seen in the 2009 Chevron World Challenge, a tournament hosted by Tiger Woods in Florida. The 29-year-old made a double eagle on a 568-yard
par-5 hole after he forced his second shot into the cup.
Villegas has not won a title since the 2010 Honda Classic in which he defeated Anthony Kim by five strokes. In the same year, he finished third in the Accenture Match Play Championship and eighth in PGA Championship. Owing to his few but high finishes, the
player had his name written in the top ten players on the Official World Golf Rankings. However, after constant failures and declining performance, the Columbian fell to his current 52nd place in 2011.
However, after eagling the par-5 on Thursday, the pro is back with a bid to take a share in the $5.7-million event, which is underway at the Harbour Town Golf Links in Hilton Head.
