Campanologist rings the changes for Frankie Dettori
Frankie Dettori swapped the local meetings in Britain for a Group One winner in Germany with Campanologist at Hamburg.
Campanologist had been threatening to win a Group One race for some time and his victory in the Grosser Preis Von Lotto Hamburg was also a first championship-race win of the year for both Dettori and trainer Saeed bin Suroor.
Campanologist, making his fourth consecutive start in a Group One, broke for Dettori but raced a little keenly before settling in third on the inside of the six runners after the first quarter-mile. He was still third as the pace started to quicken with five furlongs to go and was asked for his effort entering the straight.
After tacking across to the stands’ side with the rest of the field, Campanologist ran on to take the lead from Wiener Walzer with a furlong-and-a-half to go. He went clear entering the final furlong and fended off the late challenge of the rallying Weiner Walzer to win by three-quarters of a length, with Quijano coming out on top in a bunch finish for third. “Campanologist deserved to win a Group One race and it’s a tremendous result,” Dettori said.
A delighted Saeed bin Suroor said: “I am very pleased to see Campanologist win a Group One race. He came to Germany in very good form and I am particularly happy with the manner of his victory today - he was very game. There are no plans for him at the moment but we will look to find another Group One contest for him over a mile and a half.”
Campanologist is the third Godolpin horse to win the race following on from Mutafaweq (2000) and Marienbard (2002).
Bin Surror had less luck in France where Shakespearean finished fifth to Fuisse in the Group Three Prix Messidor at Maisons-Laffitte. Earlier on the card there was a victory for War Artist, formerly trained in Newmarket by James Eustace, in the Group Three Prix de Ris-Orangis.
The win was one bright moment for his trainer Alain de Royer-Dupre after the news that his filly Rosanara will miss the Darley Irish Oaks at the Curragh. Rosanara, who would have been a rare runner in Ireland for her trainer, sustained an injury loading onto the plane.
