Question:

Camping in Ireland?

I would like to travel around Irland in summer 2008.

I'm a student and constantly short of money, so I'm looking for a cheap accommodation. I thought about dorms in youth hostels, but 10 to 20 people is just too much!

I used to go camping a lot with my parents when I was younger, so I came across the idea to buy a small tent. I've already found some campsites throughout Ireland.

However, I wonder whether it is safe for a 18-years old female to stay at Irish campsites? And what about the weather - is Ireland to cold for camping?

  1. I would not recommend an 18 year old female go camping in Ireland, you are safer staying more secure accommodation. I suggest that you find a live-in holiday job in Ireland if you can, try www.nixers.com for this.

No 18 year old female should sleep in an unsecure place if she's alone, in any country.

As regards the weather - last summer was very cold and wet, the summer before would have been ideal for camping. It's hard to know in advance.

  2. Irish campsites tend to be well run with good facilities.  Many are family run with staff onsite.  Choose the smaller & family run campsites.

Ask for a place near the staff building if you are prefer.

Make sure your tent is rated for wet conditions even if its not raining there will be dew on the grass in summer.  Generally summer weather is warm enough to camp in however bring at least a two/three season sleeping bag and an optional warm liner.

Bring rain proof gear as well.  If travelling alone a personal alarm etc is a good idea (This is relevant for the whole of europe)

I have camped in a range of campsites with no problems.

  3. I think you would be safe staying in an Irish campsite though be sensible and do not pitch your tent in remote parts of the site and look to see who your neighbours are before putting up your tent.

Maybe take some sort of attack alarm with you and keep it handy at night, it would make you feel more secure and your parents happier about you traveling alone.

As for the weather in the summer it will not be cold but there is always the possibility of rain any time of year here in Ireland, last summer was very wet.  It might be an idea to have addresses of hostels with you as a stand-by for if the weather turns bad.

Many hostels have small dorms and twin rooms.  Some links below, mostly hostels.

  4. Sorry but i have no info on campsites!! but to answer your question i think it should very safe to go camping even if you are only 18!!

The weather isnt too cold either....the rain would be your only problem

  5. Portrush and Portstewart are great, in Northern Ireland - There are great beaches, amusements, bars, restaurants for all budgets in this seaside area.

You can also visit the Giants Causeway, Dunluce Centre, etc.

Regarding the weather - You should be ok if you go areound the July/August time.

I have a really good feeling that we are going to have a good summer this year =]
