Question:

Camping outside the DC Metro Area?

I'm looking for an exciting, g*y-friendly campground within a two-hour drive from the DC Metro Area. A group of guys and I really want to go, but we're not sure where the best place would be to go.

We're planning to stay in tents, and would love extra amenities like a lake to go swimming, kayaking, and/or canoeing, outhouses & showers, etc.

  1. I can't speak to the g*y-friendly aspect of any camping sites other than to say most campers tend to be very accepting. I don't know of any anti-g*y places.

Shenandoah National Park is nice. No lake, but a river. Lots of trails and beautiful scenery.

Rocky Gap State Park in Flintstone, Md is good too. It has a nice big lake, trails, a resort (where you can rent bikes, get a nice meal, spa, etc.), plenty of camping spots. Showers are available.

Cunningham Falls in Thurmont, Md is another one with nice camping spots, lake, fun falls to play around in, rocks to climb, plenty of trails.

    Have fun!

  2. If you're willing to go a little further my husband swears by Canaan Valley, WV.  It's approx 4 hours from DC, but that really depends on where in the area you're coming from.  I've never been there so I can't vouch for it.

My family lives in Northern VA and they swear by Shenandoah River.
