  1. We just went camping with our 16 month old.  We had originally planned on camping for 6 days, came home after 3.  It was really fun, my daughter enjoyed it but 3 days was enough.  Especially since the forecast called for rain!

your son will likely just enjoy exploring the campsite.  It's a new environment.  Go for nature walks, check out the campsite and hiking trails.  Go to the beach.  And of course, the campfire sing-alongs!

To be honest with you, by the time we fit in 3 meals, 2 snacks and a nap, I felt like there wasn't alot of time left to do much else.  By 7:30 she was exhausted!

    Have fun!

  2. (Not sure if he's on the older end of two, or the younger end of two?)Make a scavenger hunt for simple things he would be able to find.. like sticks, rocks, leaves, etc. When you two find these together you can then give him some sort of small explanation of what they are.

Also, you can help him roast marshmellows.. or a hot dog on the stick? You can make great fun inside a tent. Let him bring a favorite stuffed animal, and make it a 'sleeping bag' and let him tuck it in, etc. Give him his own flash light for sure, and play 'flash light wars' at night.

Maybe at night you can collect lightning bugs in a jar?

Bring a squirt gun and fill it up with water and tell him to go squirt a list of things like, 'go squirt a tree'.. then, a leaf, or the fire circle, or the grass, or a bug, etc.

You can ask him, "Do you hear that? What is that?" like the sounds of birds, crickets, whatever wild life may be around.

I know my nephew that has just turned three can talk and inquire like a whiz, and he gets the biggest kick out of waiting for the fruit bats to come out at dusk! He also enjoys helping me collect fire wood, and eats is up when I explain stuff to him (in a kid appropriate manner of course). You can also just bring a ball to play with, kick back a forth and what not for down times. Is there swimming/ or a lake nearby? That's always fun of course and makes a great camping adventure even greater.

I hope you have a great time! Make beautiful memories, two is the most fun age ever!

  3. Roasting marshmallows by the fire, making s'mores: be sure to bring graham crackers and marshmallows. Hiking, etc.

  4. here are two websites that i'm sure you'll find helpful.

  5. I have taken my son camping several times and you'd be amazed how much they enjoy it. He's 3 now but was only 1 when we started. You won't need any toys other then a book and a flashlight. During the day he will be busy exploring and you can explore with him. Search for cool looking rocks and collect bugs. I always brought toys for my son and he neevr used them. But when bedtime comes a story by flashlight helps get them to sleep...

  6. liquor! bring lots of liquor!

  7. Whenever I went camping as a kid we would either rent a paddle boat or a canoe and that was always alot of fun. If the place you are going has an open field you could always bring a ball or frisbee to throw around. If theres a good beach make sure you bring lots of stuff to play in the sand with and of course make a fire.
