Camryne Morris wins gold medal in Women’s 1500m freestyle - Santa Clara International Invitational
Camryne Morris of North Baltimore secured the gold medal in the Women’s 1500m freestyle category, on the opening day of the 2011 Santa Clara International Invitational.
The Santa Clara International Invitational is the last stop of the seven stops of the 2010-11 USA Grand Prix, which will precede the upcoming 2011 World Championships in Shanghai, this July. Santa Clara meet is of enormous importance, as it provides a stage to international swimmers to compete with each other before the world titles. The event will also conclude the USA Grand Prix Series.
The 16-year-old Morris dominated the Women’s distant freestyle swim, by posting a time of 16 minutes and 30.98 seconds. Her time was almost 48 seconds slower than the world record of 15 minutes and 42.54 seconds, set by Kate Ziegler in 2007. In addition, she was almost 19 seconds slower than the meet record of Ziegler, made in 2005.
Morris was approximately 28 seconds faster than her following swimmer, Amanda Richey of Boulder Swimming, who captured the silver medal of the event by producing a time of 16 minutes and 58.15 seconds. Catherine Breed of Pleasanton Seaha followed Richey on the podium, by earning the bronze medal of the event in a time of 16 minutes and 59.10 seconds.
Nicole Chang of La Mirada Armada finished her swim in the fourth fastest place, clocking in a time of 17 minutes and 00.06 seconds. She was followed by Richey’s team-mate, Haley Rowley, who appeared on the finishing wall, posting a fifth fastest time of 17 minutes and 02.09 seconds.
Danielle Beckwith of Wisconsin Aquatic was slightly away from Rowley, as she completed her swim in the sixth fastest spot with a timing of 17 minutes and 02.78 seconds. Tyra Rooney and Jessica James followed her on the wall, by reporting in a time of 17:08.59 and 17:10.16 minutes for the seventh and eighth spots, respectively.
The championships will continue for four consecutive days and will conclude on June 19 after the completion of all swimming events in the Men’s and Women’s category.
