I have a pre-wired home. There is a wireless router with 4 ports in the access panel. I want to connect my CPU & 2 gaming systems in a room that only has 1 LAN line. Can the 1 LAN line be split?

  1. The short answer is you need a network switch.  When buying it you obviously want to make sure it has enough ports which would be the number of devices plus one to connect back to your router.  Also make sure it automatically detects an "uplink" connection otherwise you will have to purchase a special network cable called a crossover cable.  That's really all there is to it!

P.S. Keep an eye out for a bargain.  Places like Microcenter always sell cheapies!

  2. You need to put a switch (4 or 5 port) on the end of that one line, then you can connect your machines.  Will you loose speed, well if all units are being used vs one yes you will.

You only have so much internet speed available and it will get used by the machines you connect and are using at one time. If only one machine is in use at one time then it will have all the speed available to it!
