  1. The quick answer is no - especially if both computers are Win2000 or higher.

    This is why

1.If neither computer is on a network - but connected to each other - then the two computers will pick different addresses.

    2.  If both computers are on a network and set up to get IP addresses from a DHCP server - then they will get different addresses from that server.

    3.  If you manually set the addresses to the same address - then you will get error messages from one of them telling you there is already an address with that number.

Now - for your example.  The address x.x.x.143 means that there are different numbers for the first three numbers but they have the same  last number.  Think of an IP address as a street address.  143 would be something like an apartment number and the x.x.x could be ANY street address.

Does that make sense?  Hope so.

  2. The last number could easily be the same (they only go from 1 to 254 for IP's [0 and 255 are reserved for other uses]) but if the other numbers are the same then it comes from the same internet account (which might have many computers shared on it) so you can really only tell if they are from the same internet account.  Also, it is easy to change IPs so its not a good way to determine who someone is.
