If I connected 2 computers up to the internet, in my house would both computers have the same IP address? They will be connected to the same internet but both are not the same computer. Would the IP address be the same or different?

Thanks in advance.

  1. This won't work unless you have a router. if you have DSL pr cable, and you connect a computer to the Internet via the cable or DSL modem, you are assigned ONE IP address. You can't connect another device to that modem at the same time and get a new address.

However, if you have a router, each computer connected to it (directly or using wireless) will have a unique IP address on your private network (i.e., in your house). The modem will have a single IP address and will use the router to router all the incoming traffic to the correct computer.

Do a search on "network address translation" or NAT to see how this works.Or, just read the link below.

By the way, some other people answered and said that two machines would have the same address. THIS IS WRONG. Unless you use a router as I described above, two devices cannot share the same IP address on the same network. The IP address you get from your modem can only be assigned to that device. As I said, you need a router to allow all the incomeing and outgoing traffic to get to the correct machine.

  2. no, they will be the same, i have a computer, my bf has a laptop, we live in the same house, and both have the same ip address, makes it difficult sometimes if we want to join the same website, they think we are joining twice!

  3. Your 2 computers would have different private IP addresses, however the rest of the world will not see these IP addresses, they will see the IP address of your router, and this will be different to your private IP addresses.

  4. If you are UK, click on this site, it will tell you your IP address,

then try it with your other computer just to check...OK?

  5. They would be the same. To make them different you would need to install them on separate lines.

  6. Well your external ip adress should be the same from http://whatsmyip.org/ , although the internal ip will probly be diffrent , to check them just goto start > run > type cmd > ipconfig this will show you a internal ip adress for your computer.

  7. same ip address, its the router that has the external ip address. ie type in the google search bar 'what is my ip address' it will show you. then do it with the other pc. if your isp gives you a static ip address then that number will remain the same always, if its a 'dynamic' address every 3-4 days it will change. thats don to stop people hosting from home and port forwrding gaming etc.
