Question:

Can 39 year old Roy Jones Jr. beat Joe Calzaghe?

No one would ever argue that a prime RJ couldn't destroy Calzaghe. If Jones were in his late 20s or early 30s he would kayo Calzaghe in just a few rounds.

Does he still have what it takes to win this fight?

Personally, I doubt it. I just think he's too far gone.

In any case, it will be an interesting fight and a very big event.

If RJ and Calzaghe fight, who will win? And how?

  1. the age difference aint so big, the only thing that Roy must do is get his confidence back if he can do that he well win easy just having fun as he did with Tito and you can notice that it took him a couple of rounds to actually start fighting Tito so if he can get the fear out of him and bring the old Roy back he can whoop calzaghe all night long you'll see

  2. We all know a younger RJJ would have definitely dominated Joe. However, RJ's time has passed. He no longer looks like the hungry fighter he once was. I believe as posted already that Joe will outwork him throughout the fight. The only caveat being that if Rj can land with more frequency than B-hop he might get a knockout! RJ still has some pop left. With that said, this fight is interesting on a couple of other fronts:

    1. They both enjoy playing to the crowd. (hands at their waists, taunting each other, etc.)

    2. RJJ is not as defensive as Hopkins. (So less holding and more boxing)

  3. CALZAGHE 7TH ROUND KO

  4. yes Roy can beat him if hes fast enough and can deal with Joe's pressure but he has no power and he is not so good of a fighter i mean he won alot of fights by the cards not by k.o and i think k.o make you a great fighter pound 4 pound

  5. I've read all the answers on here so far and taken all the opinions into consideration and here's mine:

After watching Roy Jones beat Trinidad earlier this year, I still think Roy has a little pop in his hands.  He hits harder than Calzaghe and is certainly capable of a knockout!

That being said, Calzaghe would most definitely be the busier fighter but wouldn't hurt Jones.

If it goes to a decision, Calzaghe lands twice as many punches so he wins.

But don't count Roy out BECAUSE HE STILL HAS SOME GAS LEFT IN THE TANK AND A PRETTY GOOD PUNCHER'S CHANCE..........WE'LL SEE NOV. 15TH

  6. Yes he can win, and he can win it easy.  Calzaghe is 36, not that much younger.

Also, Hopkins fought Calzaghe very close and didn't even fight, he threw like 20 punches a round, landed like 8 per round, and still won on one judge's card, and was close on the other two.

If Calzaghe was as great as a lot of people here are claiming (and I'm still not totally convinced Jim Lampley hasn't just created like 50 yahoo accounts) he should have been able to just roll over Hopkins who just stood right in front of him and didn't throw punches.

Who was more dominant in their last fight?  You don't even have to use Hopkins, Kessler was about 2 rounds from beating Calzaghe, Trinidad is a legend and was never in the fight.

  7. RJ would, why? he is not dumb to go toe to toe. Even Tito, being extra overweight, and fighting in Roys natural territory, gave him a good taste of his punches in the early rounds, thats when Roy started his dancing around. Calzaghe would be following him all night long, thats why I think Roy would win, not because a better fighter, but a better runner LOL. Last thing, I dont know why people give props to Roy over the Tito win when Tito had to go way up in weight to fight him. Roy didnt even dare to go down in weight cus he knows Tito wouldve easily demolished him. Ive read a lot of comments saying Roy had an impressive win LOL what a joke. The first time he fought Tarver, I went for Tarver, why? Tarver is a natural at that weight and no one believed me. The second time, I went for Tarver again. Roy will never dare step down or up to a true champ, so Roy, whenever u fight Calzaghe, do your running and slapping thing cus thats the only choice u have. Now lets hear the bashing for all roy fans LOL

  8. Roy Jones Jr. would dominate this fight. If your a boxing fan like me and you've been keeping up with Roy you have also noticed how great he looks right now. HIs knockout win over the young undefeated up and coming Anthony Hanshaw.

His total domination of Tito Trinidad(who also looked excellent but should not have fought at that weight).

Jones' hands are faster than Calzaghe's and he is way quicker on his feet than Calzaghe. Roy hits harder than Calzaghe and has better ring generalship than Calzaghe. Roy Jones would win this fight and possibly by KO looking at the style match-up. Roy is a Jedi Master when it comes to counter punching and Calzaghe comes in head first chin up and throws punches in bunches. Roy's quick left hook or uppercut would make this a tragic night for Calzaghe fans. They would definitely get a flashback of another englishman who fought one of our fast, stinging, dancing, counter punching jedi masters in Mayweather vs Hatton.

  9. I agree with basically everything you said, except for maybe how long it would have taken Roy to finish him- there is no doubt that he would have murked Calzaghe, but I don't know about it only being in a few rounds; I think it would have most likely been a dominant points victory or maybe a late round stoppage.  As for right now, I really can't see Roy beating Calzaghe at this stage.  Roy's problem is that he is just not nearly as active in his fights anymore due to his age as well as him being gun shy (afraid of being knocked out again)- it took him 4 rounds to actually start fighting against an overweight Felix Trinidad.  A high volume puncher like Joe Calzaghe would take advantage of Roy's inactivity throughout the fight and most likely outwork him to a decision (kind of like the Bernard Hopkins fight).  But, honestly, I'm okay with seeing a Calzaghe-Jones fight because as you said, it would be a huge event and I would really like to see Roy get that one last shot at becoming champ again against a top opponent instead of fighting guys like Prince Badi Ajamu, Anthony Hanshaw, or an overweight Tito.  I also believe that it will be more entertaining than the Hopkins fight because Roy is not as defensive as B-Hop and he does not hold nearly as much.  At the end of the night, Calzaghe will win a unanimous decision in a pretty good fight.

Carrot top- Jones fought Tito at 170 because TRINIDAD was having trouble making weight.  If you recall, he didn't even make 170 pounds at first and he had to weigh in again.  And Roy did go down in weight to fight him- he agreed to fight at a catchweight instead of fighting his natural 175 pound limit, and regardless, Tito could not have made anything under 170 because he could barely make that.

  10. Roy Jones can definately beat Calzaghe. The fight with Hopkins was close and personally I had Hopkins winning it but Roy Jones is far greater than Hopkins. Roy Jones still has the skills that made him a legend but people doubt him because of his two knockout losses. His jaw is suspect and Calzaghe does throw a lot of punches but Roy Jones is not a stationary fighter. Roy Jones vs. Calzaghe would end in a knockout victory for Roy Jones in the middle of the 9th round.

  11. Roy Jones jr 6 rounds

  12. i think jones will have his moments but calzaghes pressure will end up being too much for jones.i think calzaghe will win a decision, maybe one jones fans wont agree with.i could also see jones possiably quitting on his stool between one of the later rounds.

  13. i think RJ still has a bit in the tank, he looked good in his last fight against Tito, even thou Tito is not in his prime either they still put up a good match.....RJ can win this match is his stamina lets him..

  14. Watching Roy's recent fights, you see only flashes of the RJJ that was one of the greatest all time.  I just don't see how Roy can "be Roy" enough to take a decision.  So, Roy will put a scare into Calz, and probably cause a few dozen heart attacks across Wales, but not muster enough effective punching to win.  Calz needs to do the same against Roy that he did against B Hop:  move his hands more than his opponent to win a workman's decision.
