Question:

Can't Hit Short Irons?

This may seem strange but I have no trouble hitting my 3, 4, 5, and 6 irons but 7, 8, 9 and pw I can't hit worth a darn. My golf instructor had me increase my irons an inch in length..this has helped and I can now make some contact with my short irons and hit my long irons even better but still I'm having problems. Question; at address, if you're using a pw, do you set up with the pw's club with the face up (with club straight and parallel to body) or do you angle the club at address so the face points toward the ball (like a 5 iron); where the club face faces the ball instead of facing upward? Any ideas? Thanks!

  1. ALWAYS hit with a decending blow on an iron shot.  THis is your problem.  Focus on pinching the ball against the ground, and you will see results.  Good luck!@

  2. Regardless of the club you are using the sole of that club should lie on the ground with the face aimed at the intended target. That is why there are so many irons to the set, each designed to hit a certain yardage without manupilating the club face.

  3. When hitting the PW let the face point up.

  4. Just try and work on your upper body srength

  5. Ok, i believe at address the whole 'face up face down' thing you keep talking about is called forward press. Yes on shorter shots there should be some forward press but not necessarily 'forcing' it as much as it just happens. What i mean is at address while using your lower irons, you should have the ball played more back toward your back foot while still 'dangling' your hands naturally which (as you can tell) will cause some forward press. What it seems like is happening, to me anyway, is that your having a timing problem or more specific a release problem. Since you are able to hit your longer irons better, i would venture to say that your are delaying your release. Tell you what when you check this answer, add a detail to the question and answer my question and i can tell you EXACTLY what is wrong with your swing.

Here is my question to you: Are the majority of your long iron ( 3, 4, 5, etc.) misses either Hooks and/or a high Push?

Answer that for me and I will tell you what is going on. And if it's not either one of those (but i'm gonna put money that it is) then please tell me where you do miss your long irons.

  6. Try to use a shorter swing with your short irons, set the ball in the middle of your stance and concentrate on your rhythm.

  7. Your pro hasn't covered this??? All your clubs should lay the same. The natural angle of the face is different for all your clubs but the way you set up is the same. It's impossible to say why you are not hitting your short irons better w/o getting a look at your set up/swing. Good Luck!!!
