My sister just got a wireless router hooked up to her computer. All the lights are on-so its running okay. When I use my laptop to connect to it for internet access, I can see it in my available wireless connections-but I can not fully connect. It aqcuires an IP address for a long period of time then it says I have limited connectivity. I tried logging in to the router from her computers browser using 192.168.1.1 but it doesnt let me, so this must not work for this kind of router. I have no clue of what kind of router this is, there is no brand name on it at all. I was wondering if maybe it was a wrong network key, so is there also a way to change the key from her main computer? I have messed with this router for days now and this is my last option. Please give me a good walk through so I can finally chill

(both computers are xp)

  1. Yup, it probably has to do with the WEP/WPA etc security. As for the ip of your router,...go to RUN> type "CMD" . when the DOS prompt opens, type "ipconfig/all".  look for the ip that says "default gateway"... this is the ip you want to type in a web browser to get to your routers configuration screen.

Of course then you will still need the password, which might be admin/admin for lynksis or admin/password for belkin etc.. do a google search for default passwords for whatever brand you have.

If you cant get in and you have physical acces to the router, just use a ink pen and look for the reset switch on your router and reset it, this will clear the passwords and security configurations.

  2. Hi ,i am facing the same problem . Suddenly my wi-fi connection is not working in my laptop but wired lan is working fine when connected through cable. when i tried to connect through Wireless LAN it acquires invalid IP address . Also i tried to manually change the TCP/IP settings by giving the correct IP address, subnet and dns server,it shows connected but nothing you can do with internet explorer . If i select automatically take IP address,it takes invalid and shows limited or no connectivity ,is it related to WEP key or what ?

  4. Hi,

It should have to do network security which you already mentioned. Please connect your laptop via a wired connection and the try to login to the router.
