Can't capture video data with Windows Movie Maker...?

Question

I'm trying to pull video off of my camera using Windows Movie Maker, but when I click on "Capture from Video Device" it errors out. I've never had this problem before, and I have all the necessary equipment. Any suggestions for...

a) How to get it to work, or

b) A free/open-source program I could try (other than VirtualDub)?

that usually doesnt work.. normally ull need the software made for ur camera.. if u dont got a cd with it look it up online on their website etc

Since you neglected to tell us the make & model of your camcorder or the make & model &  OS of your PC you don't have many options!! Consult your manual!! There is a whole section devoted to your answer!! If you don't have one, you should be able to download one from the manufacturers support site.
