Question:

Can't find a job at 17.?

I've lowered myself to places like McDonalds, Kroger, Publix (Typicaly places for a 17 yr old) but I'm not having any luck what so ever. I don't have any real previous job experience. I've gone through Monster, applied to random jobs that hardly sound legit, and etc. Nothing is working.

Any tips?

  1. i know exactly how you feel. Starbucks is almost always hiring and the job is better than Macdonald.

at you age receptionist jobs are good.

working in shoe stores as stock person.

  2. you can definitely get a job at 17...i mean i worked at burger king when i was 14. easiest way is going to places in person be extremely polite and dressed nice casual. if that doesn't work see if any of your friends are working at a place that's hiring... it always helps if someone recommends you for a position. places that are just opening are good options too.

  3. I started working at a hardware store in high school. It's pretty easy. Not to mention you'll learn a bunch of stuff. IT wasn't bad, I worked 3 days 5-9 and 1 or both weekend days.

  4. Well, make sure you are clean cut, for one, because if you're not, you pretty much shoot any chance you have at a job since they'll be relying on first impressions since you don't have experience to offer. (and I'm not saying you aren't, just letting you know). This means a nice haircut, shaved, clean nails & hair, no piercings, etc. and also wearing clean, nice clothing. Even though it's not right people will judge you on how you look, so look the part!

Two, make sure you are available! For example, if you do sports that require daily practices, people won't want you. When you fill out applications there is probably a space to put availability. make sure you don't have a crazy schedule nobody would want to work around!

Also make sure the places are actively hiring. most grocery stores and fast food places are, but just be sure, otherwise your application is pretty much tucked away and forgotton about, if not outright pitched.

And last, ask around your family, friends of the family, etc. to see if they know any managers/owners of local places and if they could put in a good word for you!

And remember, pretty much the only jobs you'll get now are minimum wage labor jobs, so don't get your hopes up.
