Shiffert

I know the spelling was altered because the story is..my grandfather couldn't read and they had to shorten it to help him out in life...I have no family living left and no clue of the original spelling.

What do you think? No one can ever find it!

  1. try this

  2. Did you try other spellings?  like Schiffert?

Did you try spelling it replacing the ff s with one f.  Could the name be related to his occupation?

Could the ff s really be a v?

Could you search him by other criteria?  Like his age at a certain time?

Just some suggestions to think about.

  3. if your last name is rivas- that sounds spanish-spain, if the orginal was  spelled rivaz thats mexican  . my dad who raised me was mexican, and i'm very proud of that. he was from chiuhua. my awello, grandfather was a sheep /farmer. they told me the majority of spanish people from mexico, if the end of the name was with an s, or es, thats spain heritage, if it ends with a z, thatsa mexico. cubans, and puerto ricans are the same

  4. There will still be records concerning your grandfather, even if he could not read. Depending on when/where he was born, there may be a birth certificate, census records, social security, etc.  All of these are normal genealogical tools, and unique as to how they are used or located. Everyday stuff for genealogists.

If you post grandpa's name at death (with est. date and place), we can probably pick up his trail, and see what the records show.  Or, send to the prior poster who offered.  The hard core persons here normally subscribe to ancestry.com and are happy to help.

  5. Shiffert is a real name, there are several listed here, and more if you google it !

Are you quite certain your grand-father's name was altered ?

  6. Rootsweb(free site) has 1188 entries in family trees for Shiffert.  Put Shiffert or a full name in the Rootsweb block of the link below and then on the next screen probe World Connect.

Just don't take as absolute fact everything you see in family trees on ANY website, free or paid. The information is subscriber submitted and mostly not documented or poorly documented. Even when you see the same information repeatedly by many different subscribers that is no guarantee at all it is correct. A lot of people copy without verifying.

You can probe on a name and it will take you to a screen that will give you the name and email address of the submitter.

  7. I found a bunch of Shifferts at ancestry.com

Go there and put in the name and do a search.  I have paid for access to the records, so you may not be able to view them.  There is an email link at my profile and if you want to send me your grandparents names and where they lived, I'll look them up.

  8. sounds like claudia Schiffer
