Can't find cheap airfare to Germany :(?

Question

I want to visit a friend in Germany this Christmas, but all the websites I'm going to have either no flights there then, or prices over $1,000. My friend said she found tickets for like $600 if you buy them in advance (I think August is pretty far in advance!) but I can't find anything NEAR that low! Can anyone help me? I don't know if I can visit if it is that expensive...
