Question:

Can't get NetGear wireless router to install and work, please help?

I purchased NetGear WGR614 so my wife can connect to the internet on her new laptop from anywhere in the house. I'm trying to install this thing on our existing cox cable modem system and following the instructions and I can not get the setup to run.

Following their instructions, I disconnected the ethernet connection between my desktop and the cox cable modem and connected the output of the cable modem to the internet in connector on the router. I then ran an ethernet cable from LAN port 1 on the router to the PC ethernet connector that was connected formerly to the cable modem. When I did that, my desktop could no longer access the internet and the setup disk provided with the router will not run due to the fact that there is no longer an active cable connection. What am I doing wrong?? This should be pretty straight forward. Please help.

Thanks

  1. first put the disk away ! going to do nothing more then cause trouble and enter the settings manually

    hook up sounds correct

go to your cmd prompt and type in ipconfig /all take note of the default gateway this is your router ip and is probably 192.168.1.1

type that into your address bar this will bring you to the netgear page , there you will need to enter the factory user name and passowrd

    probably admin / admin

    or admin / password

you will be prompted to change this

from there set the router to pull a dhcp connection

check the settings to see if your now pulling a IP

turn the wireless feature on and also make sure under services on the laptop that the windows zero configuration is set to automatic and is turned on

you now should be all set , remember ( if you wish and recommended) to create a wepkey so others can not access your connection

need further help feel free to MESSEGER me here on yahoo

  2. Be sure to unplug both router and modems power cable for around 30 sec, then plug in the modem's power cable wait 15 sec, then plug in the router cable and wait. It will take about 30sec-1min for your router to configure itself then you should get an IP address.

  3. Make sure you are not doing something stupid.  Check your connections first.  Make sure the router and modem are plugged in and powered on.  Your data cables are plugged in fine according to your description.

If your power cables are correct, you probably need to clone one of your MAC addresses.  NetGear's tech support line will help you do that.
