Bought a radio shack 5.8 cordless phone (it is a 43-138) last December with one base unit and one extra handset. At that time we were using it as an extra phone so when the second hand set didn't pick up a dial tone we did little to solve the problem. We are now in a larger home that needs a phone upstairs as well as downstairs in case our handicapped parents need help during the night, so the second hand set would be a great help. We have our phone hooked up to cable at this time (not in the other house, however, and we had the same dial tone trouble, so that is not the issue) so we can not just plug a land line into the regular phone jacks. In summation: New phone, cordless, no dial tone in second handset, and both batteries are well charged (unless, like someone suggested in one of these yahooanswers, that the battery is bad...that is possible I suppose and will look into it by switching with the usable base unit handset) Other than the battery idea, any suggestions? Thanks for your time and consideration on this issue. Linda
