Question:

Can't get a queen size boxspring up the stairs to the second floor?

I just got a new apartment and I can't get my bed in! :( We got the mattress up (by shoving it!) but it's impossible to get the boxspring onto the second floor. It got stuck less than a quarter of the way up. My boyfriend said he would build me something to put my mattress on, but I don't know what I want. We are on a tight budget.. I can't spend more than 100 on this project, but I need a bed! He is very handy, DO YOU HAVE ANY IDEAS OF WHAT HE COULD BUILD THAT WOULD LOOK NICE, NOT TAKE UP MUCH SPACE, and possibly have a canopy draped from it. I am really bummed out that I can't have my bed.. I bought 10 yards of sheer fabric for the canopy I was going to drape over the frame, but the frame doesn't fit either.

any ideas, advice, websites that may help me.. PLEASE ANSWER!!

  1. Does the frame possibly disassemble so you could get that in?  As far as not having your box spring, as a temporary replacement maybe you could build a "box" using 2x4s and then plywood over the top.  You could then cover it with a bedskirt so you would not have to look at it everyday.  This would work for a temporary solution and hopefully you will get to move to a location where you can once again use your box spring.

BTW, two twins make a king-size bed.  We are using that now.

  2. They make a split queen box spring. That is what I had to get.

  3. Is your head board and foot board full length with the canopy rails? The reason I ask is because I have a wrought iron canopy bed which is a head board, foot board and attachable canopy, but because my ceilings were too low I attached the k***s from the top of the canopy to the headboard and foot board leaving out the canopy. If yours is wood do the canopy rails unscrew? If not would you consider cutting them off and then only having to buy the threads to s***w them back on (much cheaper!) then you could move it wherever you want.

  4. 1. Trade the queen size for a regular double. 2. Get a different apartment.

    3. Set the mattress on the floor and call it stylish.

  5. You can use two twin size box springs. Two twins is the same as one queen and if you have the proper covers you can't tell. I also couldn't get a queen size box spring into an apartment one time so I went with two twins and it's the same size :)

Not sure on the frame but I know that every one I have ever seen collapses down to almost nothing to make it easy to move?

I don't know if they still have them but I remember being in a Big Lots store a few months back and they had metal canopy frames for sale, they were pretty cheap I think under $100. They came in a box so you could probably get it into your apartment no problem. Not sure how high your ceilings are but that may be an option :)

  6. use a chainsaw and cut the wall down but becarefull not to cut any plumbing or electric wires that are behind the sheetrock that you cant see. oh wear saftey glasses when useing power tools.
