Ok, my scratch spin is terrible. First of all, no matter how hard i try, my legs won't cross how they are suppose to. (But my spin is REALLY fast! so imagine how fast it could be if i crossed my legs!) And as you can imagine, i also have this problem in my jumps. secondly, the only spin i don't go on my toepick is the sit spin. My toepick problem makes it very diffiult to do my other spins, especially the layback. And no, it is not my skates! HELP! (I NEED SOMEBODY!)

  1. Let's start with the scratch spin-- It took me 2 whole months to get that down! I imagine it would be easier for you to cross your legs if you would slow down, so as you're getting used to crossing your legs, I would go into the spin and wind up slowly. In the jumps, I would practice off-ice on a stand still. For going on your toepick, you must still need to grow and find your center of balance.  I have the same problem with some of my spins, and I overcome it by trying to center my weight on the ball of my foot.

    Hope this helps!!!

  2. it looks like this has been pretty well covered in the previous answer but for your scratch spin center in first (because the toepick might mean you're traveling) and then try to aim your foot around and across from the start of pulling your foot in. Don't try to pull it in and  then cross it...it just won't work.

for other spins i would say just try to center them before you try to move. in any spin the hitting your toepick might just mean you have something about your position that is just off.

i'm not great with crossing my foot in jumps either but try to get used to it by doing some backspins, feeling that position and then trying your jump and getting that same feeling.

    good luck~!

  3. I used to have the same problem.

Let's face it, scratch spins can get so annoying in the beginning!

I'm sure you've heard of the sweet-spot: the ball of your foot. That's a little bit closer to the toe pick than the middle. All your spins need to be on this sweet spot, or else you'll go on your toe pick, and you won't be able to spin-at least not very well. Try to lean forward a little bit, but not too much. Think of going on the sweet spot, and the chances are that you will get a little closer to the ball of your foot. Whenever you feel yourself going on your toe pick, stop, skate around for a little and then get back at it. It's bad to keep doing something that you know is wrong. This is how bad habits are formed.

As for the crossing of the legs:

Start your spin in center. Don't try to bring it in too fast. Stay in center for at least 2 rotations, then little by little close in, and then squeeze really tight with your arms. Sometimes is helps to squeeze tighter than you think is reasonable, and think of crossing your legs very tight. It may take a little practice before you get somewhere.

When you jump, do the same thing. Perserverence is key.

The scratch spin still kind of drives me nuts on my bad days, I'm more of a jumper.

    Hope this helps,

  4. Slow it down a bit and bend your legs. If you don't bend your legs, you can't cross your legs.

    Hope this helps :)
