Can't get my HDTV to look right when connecting my PC?

Ok so i have a pretty naff HDTV, it's a cheap wharfedale set but when i use a DVI to HDMI lead to connect my PC the screen is either too big and i cant see the start menu etc or the colours go all wishy washy and it looks horrid. I've changed to resolution (i have an 8600 GT Nvidia card) but no matter what i do i can't get it to work right.

Would just a normal, proper PC monitor have this problem?

  1. mine always does this.  when you press function F8 or whatever to connect to the TV, if you press it once, the screen only covers half the TV, and if i press it twice it covers all of the TV, but is a much higher resolution so everything is enlarged.  i prefer it when it is enlarged however because i watch films through mine, and it is fine when watching the film, and it fits the whole screen. so try pressing function F8 (may be different for your laptop) twice.

  2. i think it is a problem with the hd tv that you are trying because you graphic card is really good and it is capable of running things like that so i recommend trying it on another pc possibly from a Friend and yeah don't buy a new hd tv or a graphic card unless you get to the bottom of this matter and can't resolve it.

  3. The key is going to be getting windows to use the EXACT resolution of the TV. Check your TV's manual to find that resolution and then check with the manufacturer of your video hardware to see if there's a driver update or some sort of software that will allow you to use that resolution.
