We can get sound from the system when playing a DVD but if we change to the source TV from the main unit to hear the TV through the surround sound system it just makes white noise like a radio station not tuned in. Our TV is a Phillips 42PF7621D/10. Any ideas what we have done wrong?

  1. Try the simple things first. Verify you have the TV connected properly using the TVs audio outputs. Go behind your TV and actually look to be sure you have your cables connected from the output of the tv to the input on your home theater receiver.

If that is correct verify you have the audio outputs turned "on" through the menu of your tv. . On some tvs you have to turn on these outputs (you may or may not have this option). Also make sure you have the volume disabled for the outputs.  Some TVs can control the volume level of those outputs as well. So if you turn down or mute your TV you also end up turning down or muting the audio output as well.

You may have a selection in your menu under the audio section that will read something like "external speaker volume" or "external speaker control". You may have to select "NO".  If all else fails go back and re-read the manual. It is possible the section is short and easy to overlook. Hope this helps.
