Question:

Can't "see" computer connected through D-Link router connected to main router!?

Two of my computers (one Vista, one 2000) are connected to the main router provided by my ISP. When I connect my third computer (XP laptop) to the router, all three computers can share files since they belong to the same working group. In other words, all three computers appear in the working group, no matter which computer I use.

However! I also have a D-Link wireless router connected to the main router. When I connect the XP laptop to the D-Link router, either wirelessly or with a LAN cable, it becomes isolated. I.e., it appears to be the only computer in the group, while the other two computers do not show it in the group (of the very same name).

I have phoned D-Link support, who say that it is a matter of the settings in Windows. But what settings do I need to change? And on which computer?

  1. Get rid of the d-Link or connect all computers to the (emasculated) d-Link.  You can't share files (or forward ports, if you ever need to) through two subnets, which is what you have.

  2. on your main router you will have to create a static route to the dlink router.  then on the dlink router you will have to punch a whole in your firewall that says allow all traffic from the main router
