Can't say no??

hi, I have a problem at work. My boss usually comes to work at 1:00 PM everyday and he usually assigns tasks to me at 3:30 or 4:00 and sometimes I have to stay after 5 to discuss some of the tasks he asks of me. I have no problem to sit after 5 if I'm not tired or busy with other stuff. But the thing is those extra hours I sit are not paid. It's the company's policy..they never pay you for extra hours. And they never give rewards if I did any other extra work.

Recently he asked me to create this game application on facebook developer and he told me to take a look at how to develop these applications at home in my free time.

I mean seriously, I'm not a slave!!!

I have the right to go out or play when I get home not just do some extra work and some silly application for him and his friends to play on and besides no rewards will be given.

How can I say no to him? He's a very inconsiderate person really!

  1. Take up an outside interest like GYM and say it has to start at 5.30 pm.  If you don't like lying then try actually taking up Gym after hours. Tell him you have to be elsewhere but don't look at him when you say this and then immediately excuse yourself to the toilet so he can't have a say.

  2. wow I was in  a similar  situation before with my old job. But in  New Jersey it's against the law to stay a second  and not get paid for it!  So I would remind my boss about that law and that also was the company policy, cause sometimes companies can work around the law. But my boss  would try to make me feel quilty about me not wanting to do it even though he was breaking the law  like I wasn't a good employee. I always saw ppl wiht children get away with saying that they had to get there child  so my next job i think ill lie and say i have a kid lol but that's besides the point.

Just say  that you have a second job thats what I started to say so it wouldnt make me look bad in my bosses eyes even though he was trying to pull some illegal S**t! ANd tell him that you dont have time to do those afterwork activites. sorry so long lol

  3. Yeah you do. Find another job

  4. explain to him that you'll have to discuss the matters before you leave not when you are suppose to be leaving work since you don't get paid to work ot.  Also tell him you can't be looking this stuff up on non working time unless you are being paid to do so.

  5. If you are paid hourly wages he must pay you for the extra hours. If you are on salary, he may not have to pay you for the extra hours, but you should double check this.

I would sit down and discuss the issue with your boss. First though, make up a list of all that you contribute to the company. Ask him to give you these assignments earlier in the day and you might want to test the waters for a raise.

Be advised, you are in a very competitive field.

  6. No company can require you to work on your own time.  Let them know, decisively, that you will be happy to do your work up until 5:00.  Then leave it until the next day.  They cannot fire you, legally.  These guys sound like a bunch of boneheads.  Do not let them take advantage of you.

  7. l can understand what you are saying here..The truth is you are being taken for granted, because these people know that you will not back down and they rely on you....just that little bit too much.

Time to get a backbone.Maybe just gradually at first, but if you keep telling them that you have a busy lifestyle..play sports or you have other interests,or whatever.....and that you just cannot possibly do it today..........

They will soon get the message.....hopefully.

Or you can be blunt and ask for overtime pay....
