Can't seem to find the origin of the last name Hula?

  3. It surprised me that in the 1900 census, there are 225 persons with this name in the US.  I see various birthplaces listed.. Bohemia, Austria, Poland...

    Eastern Europe names from this era (1800s) are tricky. That's because of the constant border changes and countries under other jurisdictions. Poland (for example) as we know it today, didn't exist for many years, and was split between other countries ie Germany, Russia, so forth.

    What I am trying to explain is that your ancestor may have come from a particular village, and you need to be flexible about exactly what heritage he/she was, AS A PERSON.  Any surname can have more than one "origin".. what is valid is the ancestry.

    If your ancestor was here prior to 1930, it is often simple to find them in census records (on ancestry.com), thus picking up what THEY say as their origin.
